Activities at Windsor Point: Every Day is an Exclamation Point!

Welcome to our Windsor Point blog series, where we’re opening the door on the lively, joyful spirit that fills our community—one level of care at a time. Over the next few weeks, I’ll share how we keep residents active and involved in each level of care, starting with Independent Living, where the activity calendar overflows with connection, creativity, and genuine fun.

Music, Culture & Creativity

Music is a thread that ties Windsor Point together. On any given day, the auditorium might echo with the voices of the Windsor Point Chorus or come alive with a special event like the Sing-Along with Wright of Way Music. Residents gather around the piano, led by a talented guest, and lose themselves in jazz, Broadway tunes, and old favorites. Even those who claim they “can’t carry a tune” often find themselves humming along by the end of the afternoon.

One highlight this September was Ed Lion’s live saxophone performance—his smooth sound and classic love songs from the 1950s turned the auditorium into a nostalgic dance hall for the afternoon. Residents swayed, reminisced, and let the music stir up fond memories.

Art appreciation runs deep here, too. This month, the library features a special display by Carolyn Callis, our September resident artist. Her lovely collection of artwork is on display for all to enjoy—a true testament to the creativity that thrives in our community.

And creativity isn’t just about the arts. Projects like the Windsor Point Cookbook bring residents together to share not just favorite recipes but the stories behind them—a treasured dish from childhood, a meal that always brings family together, or a secret ingredient passed down for generations.

Talks, Clubs & Connection

There are moments here that invite us to listen, reflect, and connect. This month, residents gathered in the auditorium for a moving talk by Peggy Williams, a retired Red Cross volunteer, who shared her experience at Ground Zero after 9/11. Her stories brought neighbors together—sparking thoughtful conversations about resilience, community, and the power of helping one another.

Coffee with Sharon, our Executive Director, is a resident favorite—a relaxed, friendly hour to share ideas, stay in the loop, and simply enjoy good company.

Games, Fitness & Friendly Rivalries

Games and laughter go hand in hand at Windsor Point. Whether it’s a spirited corn hole game during the September birthday celebration, a round of bean bag toss, or the always popular “Drink of the Month” social, there’s a sense of fun and camaraderie in every competition.

And this month, something new: laser tag at McWally’s. It was a first for nearly everyone, and the excitement was contagious. Charlotte and Ron Heinze told their grandkids about their plans and immediately got advice: “Dress in all black, Grandma. You’ve got to look like a ninja!” Charlotte showed up ready and ended up finishing third. “We had a blast,” she said. “It was something new and something different.” That willingness to try, to laugh, and to create new memories is what keeps life here vibrant.

Residents also take part in group walks at local parks and attend wellness talks focused on balance and strength—simple ways to stay active together.

Trips & Outings

Exploration and adventure are a big part of life in Independent Living. Recently, a group boarded the Windsor Point bus for a private tour at the Duke Lemur Center in Durham. With a dedicated guide sharing fascinating facts, residents got an up-close look at eight species of lemurs, followed by lunch at Elmo’s Diner—a local favorite. The trip was filled with wonder and plenty of conversation on the ride home.

Lunch outings are a highlight for many. The Juliets are Windsor Point’s Ladies’ Monthly Lunch Club, where women gather for lunch at local restaurants—sometimes returning to favorites like the Blind Pelican, known for its famously extravagant Bloody Marys and lively atmosphere. It’s about good food, great company, and making newcomers feel welcome at the table.

The ROMEOS—short for Retired Old Men Eating Out—are Windsor Point’s men’s lunch group. This month, they’re headed to The Dugout Tavern in Apex. It’s all about sharing a meal, swapping stories, and enjoying a little time out with friends.

There are afternoons at The Little Goat Soda Fountain for ice cream and old-fashioned candy, trips to Carolina Pottery and Cracker Barrel for home finds and comfort food, and—for those who love a little shopping therapy—a day out at Hamrick’s to browse, laugh, and refresh the wardrobe.

For something truly special, a group of music lovers enjoyed a morning at the NC Symphony, experiencing Dvorak’s New World Symphony live—a stirring performance and a chance to dress up, enjoy downtown, and share a little cultural magic.

Residents also set out for the Jordan Lake Picnic & Boat Tour, enjoying a Windsor Point-provided picnic lunch before a two-hour guided boat ride. It was a day of sunshine, fresh air, and relaxed conversation as friends soaked in the scenery together.

And for a good laugh, another group caught Disaster! at the Fuquay-Varina Community Theatre, performed by the Southern Wake Players—a musical parody of 1970s disaster films, full of music, mishaps, and big smiles all the way home.

Support, Wellness & Feel-Good Events

Windsor Point is a community of support and care. Residents come together for wellness talks with Legacy Health, join guided grief groups to share memories, or participate in sessions about finding comfort in daily routines and rituals. There’s always someone ready to lend a hand or a listening ear.

And as the week winds down, friends gather in the auditorium for the “Drink of the Month” social—raising a glass to the memories made and the ones yet to come.
