What Families Ask Us Most: Real Answers to the Questions on Everyone’s Mind

Choosing a senior living community is one of the biggest decisions a family will ever make — and it rarely happens quickly. People research for months. They tour, compare, debate, and revisit. They worry about getting it wrong.

At Windsor Point, we’ve had thousands of those conversations over the past 30 years. Certain questions come up again and again — from the person considering a move and from the family members walking beside them. We’ve pulled together the ones we hear most often, along with honest answers, because that’s how we prefer to do things here.

“How do I know if it’s the right time?”

This might be the question we hear more than any other, and there’s no single right answer. What we can tell you is this: most people who move to Windsor Point say they wish they’d done it sooner.

The best time to make a move is while you’re healthy, independent, and in a position to choose on your own terms — not in response to a crisis. When a move is driven by a fall, a health event, or a safety concern, the options narrow and the timeline compresses. Moving proactively means you arrive as an active participant in community life, not someone trying to recover while also adjusting to a new environment.

If you’re asking the question, it’s probably worth a conversation.

“What happens if my care needs increase over time?”

This is one of the most important questions to ask any senior living community, and we encourage you to ask it of everyone you’re considering.

Windsor Point is a Life Plan Community — what the industry also calls a Life Plan Community with Continuing Care, or CCRC. Our full continuum of care exists on a single 17-acre campus: Independent Living, our Royal Treatment and Independent Plus options for those needing some additional support, Chelsea Hall Assisted Living, Hayes Hall Memory Care, and Devon Hall Skilled Nursing.

What that means in practice is that if your needs change — whether gradually or suddenly — you don’t have to leave. Your friends, your routines, your familiarity with the staff, your sense of home: all of that stays intact. For many families, that continuity is everything.

“How does the cost compare to a rental senior living community?”

It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is that the two models aren’t quite apples to apples — which is exactly why the comparison matters.

Rental communities charge a monthly fee with no upfront commitment. That can feel simpler at first glance. But rental fees often don’t include everything, and costs can increase as care needs grow. Each additional service typically comes with an additional charge.

Windsor Point operates on a Life Plan model, which includes an entrance fee and a monthly fee that covers your care level and a comprehensive range of services. The entrance fee represents an investment in the community and in your long-term security — including access to the full continuum of care on campus should you ever need it. For many residents and families, the predictability and the peace of mind that comes with that model is worth more than the surface-level simplicity of month-to-month rental.

We’re always happy to walk through the numbers side by side. Call us and we’ll have that conversation honestly.

“Are there physicians or therapy services available on-site?”

Yes — and this is one of the details that makes a real difference in day-to-day life here.

Windsor Point partners with Eventus to provide physician services on campus, so residents have access to medical care without the burden of arranging outside appointments for routine needs. For rehabilitation and therapy, we work with Legacy, bringing physical, occupational, and speech therapy services directly to our residents.

Having these services available on-site isn’t just a convenience — it means faster access to care, better coordination, and one less thing for residents and families to manage on their own.

“How is Windsor Point different from a large corporate chain?”

Windsor Point has been locally owned and operated by the Evans family since we opened our doors in 1995. There’s no corporate parent, no distant board making decisions about this community from a boardroom in another state. The people leading this organization are invested in it personally and in the long run.

That shows up in small ways and large ones — in how decisions get made, in how staff are treated and retained, in how long-term residents are known by name. It’s the kind of difference that’s hard to quantify but easy to feel when you spend time here.

“Do I need to provide proof of income or financial information?”

Yes, and we want to be straightforward about why.

Windsor Point doesn’t ask for an exhaustive accounting of your finances out of curiosity. We ask because we want to make sure that life here is a good long-term fit — financially as well as personally. Our goal is simply to confirm that a prospective resident has sufficient income and resources to comfortably cover the cost of living here.

The process involves completing an application that includes financial information, along with providing statements to verify what’s been submitted. It’s a reasonable step, and our team handles it with discretion. If you have questions about what’s involved, we’re happy to walk you through it before you ever put pen to paper.

“What should we look for when touring a senior living community?”

Beyond the obvious things — cleanliness, amenities, location — pay attention to the people. How does the staff interact with residents? How do residents interact with each other? Does it feel like a place people chose, or a place people landed?

Ask about staff tenure. Ask what happens when care needs change. Ask about the fee structure — specifically, what’s included and what isn’t. Ask to see the dining room at mealtime, not just on a scheduled tour.

And trust your instincts. You’re looking for a place that feels right, not just one that checks boxes.

“What’s the first step?”

Call us. It’s genuinely that simple. A conversation costs nothing, and there’s no pressure attached to it. We’d rather spend an hour answering your questions than have you spend six months wondering.
